National Car Testing (NCT) is a compulsory roadworthiness test for all vehicles on Irish roads. The aim of the NCT is to improve road safety while at the same time protecting our environment by reducing harmful emissions from vehicles. A properly maintained car will be more fuel efficient, reliable and less likely to break down.
The test determines the roadworthiness of a vehicle and identifies any defects such as malfunctioning brakes, worn tyres and defective headlights.
Vehicles more than 10 years old are required by law to get tested annually and vehicles that are under 10 years old need to be tested every 2 years. Approximately half of vehicles fail the test first time around.
In the case of a failure, the vehicle must pass a re-test before the NCT Certificate is issued.
At Murphy Automotive Ltd. we provide comprehensive checks to identify any potential issues with your vehicle before your NCT.
After the assessment, we can perform any repair work that needs to be carried out.

Does my car need to have an NCT?
In 2000 it was introduced that cars four years and older would have to go for an NCT. However, if your car is over 30 years old, you don’t need to have an NCT.
How often do I need to have an NCT?
After buying a car, you need to have an NCT every two years for cars between four to ten years old.
How do I prepare for the NCT?
The best way you can prepare for the NCT is to bring your car in for a pre NCT service at Murphy Automotive. Our mechanics will make sure everything is in order and take the pressure off your shoulders.
